General Fertility FAQs

What is infertility?

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse (or after 6 months if the woman is over 35). It may result from male, female, or combined factors.

What are the common causes of infertility in women?

Common causes include irregular ovulation, low egg reserve, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), fibroids, endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, or hormonal imbalances.

What causes infertility in men?

Male infertility may result from low sperm count, poor motility, abnormal sperm shape, varicocele, hormonal imbalances, infections, or genetic factors.

When should we see a fertility specialist?

If you’re under 35 and have been trying to conceive for over 12 months, or over 35 and trying for 6 months without success, it’s advisable to consult a fertility expert.

Can lifestyle affect fertility?

Yes. Factors like smoking, alcohol, obesity, stress, poor diet, and lack of exercise can negatively impact fertility in both men and women.

Fertility Treatments at Heartbeats IVF

What is IVF?

IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization, a process where eggs are retrieved from a woman’s ovaries, fertilized with sperm in a lab, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus.

What is IUI?

IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination, where washed sperm is placed directly into the uterus during ovulation to facilitate fertilization.

What is ICSI?

ICSI stands for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, a specialized form of IVF where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg to assist fertilization—especially useful for low sperm count or poor sperm motility.

What is AMH and why is it important?

AMH stands for Anti-Müllerian Hormone. It is a hormone that indicates a woman’s ovarian reserve, or how many eggs she has left.

What are the costs of fertility treatments at Heartbeats IVF Goa?

Costs vary by treatment at Heartbeats IVF. IUI typically costs ₹20,000 – ₹30,000 per cycle, while IVF can range from ₹1.6 to ₹2.3 lakhs depending on medication, diagnostics, and lab procedures.

Surgical Fertility Treatments

What is laparoscopic surgery in fertility treatment?

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery used to diagnose and treat conditions like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or blocked tubes. It can improve natural and assisted conception rates.

What is hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure where a small camera is inserted into the uterus to diagnose or treat abnormalities like fibroids, adhesions, or uterine septum.

What is ovarian drilling?

Ovarian drilling is a laparoscopic procedure used in women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) to induce ovulation when medications alone aren’t effective.

Can men undergo surgery for infertility?

Yes. Varicocelectomy (for varicocele correction) and procedures like TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) or PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) are used to improve sperm quality or retrieve sperm in azoospermia cases.

Male & Female Infertility FAQs

What is azoospermia?

Azoospermia is a condition where no sperm are found in the ejaculate. It may be obstructive (due to blockage) or non-obstructive (due to poor production). Treatment may include surgical sperm retrieval for IVF.

Can women with low AMH still conceive?

Yes. Though AMH indicates low ovarian reserve, many women with low AMH conceive with IVF using tailored stimulation protocols or consider egg donation if needed.

How do fibroids or cysts affect fertility?

Fibroids or ovarian cysts can distort the uterus, block fallopian tubes, or affect egg quality. Removal through laparoscopy or hysteroscopy may improve fertility.

Is IVF safe for the mother and baby?

How many cycles of IVF are usually needed?
