IVF- Test Tube Baby
IVF is also called In Vitro Fertilization. IVF is a type of advanced infertility treatment that is frequently used to complete families. In IVF treatment, the fertilization process takes place with in a specialized machine called an IVF incubator. The embryos thus produced are then transferred in to the woman’s uterus.
The IVF process begins with identification of couples who may benefit from this technique. Once the couple has undergone counselling and treatment planning, we can begin the treatment with the lady’s menses.
The woman comes to the IVF clinic on the second or third day of the menstrual cycle. The woman undergoes an ultrasound examination to see the number of eggs in both ovaries and also the endometrial thickness in the uterus. The woman is then administered IVF injections.
These IVF injections will stimulate the woman’s ovaries to produce follicles or eggs. These injections may be needed for 8 to 12 days to produce good number of eggs to be harvested for IVF process.
The woman is followed up using ultrasonography to see when these eggs reach maturity. This process is called Follicular Monitoring.
Once the woman’s follicles have attained maturity, these eggs are retrieved in to test tubes by a process called Trans vaginal oocyte retrieval (TVOR).
During TVOR, the woman is given short general anaesthesia. Under anaesthesia, the woman is fully unaware of the procedure and is completely pain free. At Heartbeats IVF, we make sure that the entire IVF process is comfortable and safe for the woman. The egg retrieval process lasts for 15 to 30 minutes and the patient is discharged on the same day.
The retrieved eggs are assessed for quality, quantity and maturity. The best eggs are selected and fertilized with the husband’s sperms. A fertilized egg is called a zygote. This zygote then progresses into a test tube baby or an embryo.
The growth of the embryos is monitored for 3 to 5 days in the safety of the IVF lab. Once the embryos are fully ready, only the best quality embryos are transferred in to the uterus in a process called Ultrasound guided embryo transfer. The embryo transfer process is not done under anesthesia and the would-be mother can enjoy to witness the entire process.
From start to finish the IVF process may last for 15 to 20 days. None of the treatment processes need the couple to stay overnight in the IVF clinic.
The woman then awaits her pregnancy test results which is done 14 days from the embryo transfer date.
